Learn about our opportunities!
The Ipoh Model United Nations (IpohMUN) conference is a 3-day-long, community-led, non-profit conference that will reproduce the course of international diplomacy and relations for students aged 13+, based in Ipoh, Malaysia. At IpohMUN, participants will have the chance to learn about the workings of the United Nations and the challenges and opportunities that arise with global cooperation by taking on the roles of UN diplomats.
IpohMUN is designed to be a platform for students to discuss the most urgent issues of our time and to propose innovative, creative solutions. Throughout this process, it is in the hopes and vision of the Secretariat that delegates will obtain skills such as policy making, negotiation, teamwork, public speaking, and most importantly, a strong understanding of the problems that face the world at large.
Ipoh Model United Nations strives to achieve the goals above by providing the youth and future of Malaysia with an affordable, high-quality and local MUN conference experience which will serve as a stepping stone for their journey into the world of diplomacy.
Fees for prestigious international MUN conferences often exceed thousands of ringgit, intended to reflect a premium experience and unparalleled educational opportunities. Such barriers exclude the majority of Malaysian students from taking part in Model United Nations. Undoubtedly, the activity is hindered by stereotypes of elitism, limited awareness and understanding, and difficulty gaining traction even among local students who can afford it, due to the STEM-focused nature of our education system.
Private institutions in Kuala Lumpur have long recognised this situation and have sought to address it, leading to the development of various localised MUN conferences, typically established by their respective MUN clubs, with a focus on academic quality and affordable fees. The MUN Congress by the Malaysian Youth Association for Diplomacy and Policy (MYADP) currently lists 25 registered Model United Nations clubs. Of these 25 clubs, an extremely disproportionate amount are concentrated in a) international schools, and b) Kuala Lumpur.
It is therefore our opinion that MUN remains largely plagued with uneven access. Many of these conferences still do not offer public registration, typically due to institutional constraints, symbolising the closed, perpetuating cycle that has befell Model United Nations in Malaysia for years. That also does not address the core issue that the concentration of conferences in Kuala Lumpur leads to a lack of opportunity elsewhere, with conferences moving towards developing schedules which increasingly hinder participation for participants with significant geographical distances, while simultaneously choosing not to offer accommodation or travel support that further perpetuates inaccessibility.
Ultimately, this cycle has led to a lack of inclusion that continues to suppress Model United Nations as a potential activity for public school students. Government recognition of MUN conferences is crucial for public school students as government-recognised events allow them to gain PAJSK (co-curricular points). PAJSK points are crucial for admission into and scholarships for the top universities in Malaysia following the public education system. Yet, even the most prestigious and reputable international MUN conferences struggle to obtain government recognition, which is notoriously difficult due to its significant regulations and requirements. We believe many such conferences do not feel the need to do so, given their success within the existing closed system of international schools.
Ipoh Model United Nations is built by an experienced team of Malaysian students, privileged enough to understand the situation, and passionate enough to decide to do something about it. It is our firm conviction that such a system detracts from the potential impacts Model United Nations could have on hundreds of thousands of students equally passionate about international issues, keen to learn new skills, and that otherwise would have chosen to participate should such barriers cease to exist.
As such, the values of IpohMUN can be surmised to be the following:
Combatting misconceptions and spreading awareness about the educational and other opportunities MUN offers for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, academic pursuits, or others;
Working towards the removal of financial, geographic, and other constraints which would otherwise limit participation from any student, and consistently developing innovative solutions to further this goal;
Ensuring global-standard, premium-quality, authentic offerings and experiences reminiscent of top global conferences. while mixing in top local academic expertise and locally-relevant topics, ultimately seeking to empower students;
Guaranteeing educational benefits.
IpohMUN's initial conception, team, initiatives, and binding compass is built entirely and solely to serve these values and our vision. From being the first physical conference outside of the Klang Valley post-pandemic and the first community-led and non-institutional conference post-pandemic, to the only MUN conference nationally in 2024 to obtain government recognition, to offer 60% subsidies for public school students, to establish transport and accommodation programmes for those travelling from elsewhere.
IpohMUN was originally an idea crafted by an Ipoh student closely connected with MUN in Malaysia. The student wanted to find a way to spread the educational opportunities that MUN provides to students across Malaysia, especially in areas where MUN is less well-known, as almost all Malaysian MUN conferences are usually held in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Whenever the IpohMUN Secretariat attended one of these conferences, a thought always re-surfaced back into their minds: "What if there were groups of students just as passionate as we were, but which the location of MUN conferences made it such that it was inconvenient or too expensive for them to attend? What if, instead of having to travel inter-state or internationally, they could attend a physical MUN conference from within the same city? What if there was a way for us to put our policy-making and resolution-writing into real-life action in our communities?"
And thus, the concept behind IpohMUN was born; an MUN conference focused on developing motivated students into promising leaders of the MUN scene and resultingly, of the world.
Believing in learning and quality of the debate as the most important aspects in MUN, IpohMUN intends to build a generation of students in Ipoh who will achieve success in other MUN conferences in the future. As a non-profit, IpohMUN is an organisation built by motivated individuals with a passion for education to participants in MUN conferences not only in an academic manner, but via the multi-faceted experiences and skills that an authentic Model UN conference offers.
IpohMUN is built upon three common principles: Accessibility, Quality and Education.
Accessibility - We strive to build a common image in the Malaysian MUN scene that depicts an equal opportunity for all students to participate in MUN, regardless of hindering factors.
Quality - We strive to build an event experience akin to top conferences across the world, such that participants will fondly look back and reminisce towards in the future.
Education - We strive to teach participants and leave a sense of academic fulfilment, as well as ensure that participants have learned more about MUN through the multiple facets it provides.
As we strive to expand access to MUN in Malaysia, we hope that students continue to benefit from what truly authentic MUN experiences can offer, while catering to local demands. With this in mind, we hope that the acronym "MUN" will be one that strikes the future generations of Malaysian youth with the same burning passion as the current leaders of the world, and that IpohMUN continues to craft a world where anybody can access MUN regardless of socioeconomic status, location, or ethnicity.
